Flutter / slow jigs new section on Seabooms.com

Flutter/slow jig section in my online store is now up and running, the pattern jig I have opted for is a well tried and tested style used by USA jig anglers for a variety of species. Weights from 5oz/142g – 9oz/255g with smaller weights down to 2oz will be added shortly but these current weights will suit a good variety of tide/drift speeds when fished using the ultra thin diameter braids like Power Pro, Nanofil etc. Colours chosen are based on soft lures that regularly take fish on the wrecks and reefs in the UK and are easily repaired with ordinary fast drying paints. Jigs are made in lead so you can use them as is flat or you can change the shape and put a S curl into the body for a totally different action on the rise and the drop. System is one of choose the jig and then choose the assist hook setup that suits your angling requirements, you have a choice of circle, octopus, Sakuma manta extra’s or treble hooks all top quality hung on either stainless steel shafts or the traditional cord. Assist hooks are complete with heavy duty split rings, carbon steel seamless rings on the cords and Sakuma 1/0 or 2/0 swivels so all you have to do is hang the chosen jig on and go fishing. The range of teasers is also live so there is another option to consider to increase your catch rates. Good basic range to kick this section off and it will grow as I add more choices, enjoyed some good sport over the summer using pirks and jigs taking some nice Cod and Pollock and with lighter rods, reels and ultra thin braids being put together for future wreck and reef drifting trips along with soft lures should make for interesting days out on the boats and hopefully some good catches. 24lb Cod pirking in the English Channel

Short but sweet one of the boys on the boat out of Weymouth decided to put a basic pirk on at slack water and it produced two quality Cod and a rush for the others who had them to get all pirked up. The chaps mother put a stone on and quickly lost it too “all good excercise” keeps the weight off !!

Great day terrific fishing and the weather behaved superb and the freezer is now stocking up again with quality vac packed Cod ready for our table. Always good to fish with new faces and some of the guys I have been out with before and I tried the new Skippy Fish scented shads with our own littlefishy jigheads and they caught on every drift so a new product tested out too.

Here is the movie, play it at full screen 1080p HD it’s awesome quality.

Cod and Pollock on new lures

Well finally got out in the channel for another wrecking trip and weather behaved nicely infact the forecasters got it it right totally and we finished the day in bright sunshine and plenty of prime Cod and Pollock. I will write more up on this trip shortly when the video footage is ready, short but shows a couple of good Cod coming on the boat and the dedicated skipper gutting and preparing all the fish ready for us hard working anglers to take home.

Here is an image from the video of the best fish of the day a 23lb Cod taken at slack water with the old faithful chrome barrel pirk fitted with trebles.

Pirks and shipping costs be wise article

Shipping pirks and our range of bighead jigs are an absolute nightmare for us and even more when it comes to charging our customers what it costs to ship them out. Our largest pirk is the Scaly Fish weighing in at 465g and with all the options that are supplied with the kit it takes it over the 500g mark and into the next price band with royal mail so our shipping out cost with packaging is currently set at £3.50 for first class and cheaper if second class.

Now without prompting customers to buy more here is the option to get pirks and heavy products cheaper but it does take a few days longer for the goods to arrive. We suggest using the RM Standard Parcels the costs of shipping on a number of items drop dramatically. For example shipping up to 2kg cost currently is £4.41 so if 4 pirks and option kits are purchased cost then drops to £1.10 per set and less on the lighter pirks if you buy more.

So if you like to fish pirks regularly and on really snaggy wrecks you lose loads of gear like we do at times then contact us so we can give you the best shipping rates and cheapest way to get our product to you.

Wrecking trip early November 2011

I have a wrecking trip planned for early November and one middle of the month and possibly one towards the end of the month so the Cod and Pollack had better look out. We will be fishing mid channel and with pirks 14/16 ounce plus our bighead and bullet head jigs.

Obviously with any wreck trip you need to prepare yourself for tackle losses subject to the states of the wreck so along with our sales stocks I am gearing up this month with a bucket full of styles and sizes plus the raging rattling shads will be getting a bashing too

The Nordic pirk works well in the way it drops on a jig so they will be setup with 6/0 trebles with 8/0 and 10/0 on hand if there are large cod about. I will also be using our
Lumi tubes on the lower trace. My simple wrecking rig will allow for additional weights to be added at the snap link above the trace. Our Nordics are only 14oz so if the tide is heavy or wind against tide causes issues with the jigs I can at least try and balance the drop.I will also have our Scaly Fish pirks as they are in two sizes so that will help if tide is heavy

If the pirks are streaming away from a vertical drop because of tide I will change to the Bighead jig with a muppet and 6/0 treble with the lumi tube on the trebles shank inside the muppet. Our bighead jig is available in various sizes but again I can add more weight at the snaplink.

If the pirks and jigs aren’t connecting then the raging rattling shads will go on again with a lumi tube on the nose of the shad and if just pollock the worms will come out as I carry a box of mixed pre-hooked worms so they can be swapped very quickly.

Rods I am going to use my  new Xtra Flexx boat as it performed well on the last bass trip so going to see if I can break it when wrecking, plus it’s versatile enough if we end up coming inshore to drift the banks if the weather turns or the wrecks just aren’t playing.

Reel the Vantage 300 with 35lb braid will be back on the rod again it’s a new reel and it’s being tested in a variety of fishing conditions. It handled the large bass last time out so should deal with decent size cod and pollack.

I always take spare rods and reels loaded ready to fish so if I do have any issues with any new gear there is standby kit. Weather should be seasonal so I expect it to be cold fortunately I have a full flotation suit jacket and trousers and the boots are designed for trekking in the snow so thermal and with great grips. I always work on the basis that you can always take kit off but if it’s not there you can’t put it on and there is nothing worse than being cold and wet on a bouncing boat.

I fish all the year round and enjoy winter fishing as much as the summer and winter cod, whiting and pollack always look good in my freezer and taste good on the table, so as long as the winds stay low I’m fishing. Not sure if I will get out this month as it’s a busy time at the moment so unfortunately fishing trips have to take a back seat.

Pirks for wrecking and reef fishing

For many years pirking the wrecks was the way to catch the big hauls of cod and pollack on the wrecks. With the advances in moulding of latex lures the pirks started to take a back seat. Using a pirk on a wreck can be hard work and you have to stay in touch with the pirk so you don’t end up going fishing for the wreck.

I love pirking and jigging plus it can be far more productive than the softbait lures especially if there are big cod on the wreck you’re drifting. We make our own range of pirks and offer different colours, patterns and weights plus up to 6 options in how you set them up.
